Considering the proposal from Academician Liu, Academician An established the precursor of the State Key laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology in 1984.

 

Academician Liu was appointed as the first director of the lab in August 1987

 

Earth dust chemistry lab was established in 1988

 

The lab was listed in the ‘key labs construction plan’ in 1993. By 1995, it became a State Key Lab, and Academician An was appointed as the first lab director of the State Key laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology

 

In 1999, Institute of Earth Environment was founded based on the State Key laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology and was selected as the demonstration project of Chinese Academy and Sciences

 

The aerosol lab has been planned to establish since 2000. It finally operated in 2003. With a fast development, it was named Lab of Dust and Environment in 2006 becoming one of the five key labs under the State Key laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology. Dr. Junji Cao was appointed as the lab director.

 

In February 2011, the it became the key lab in the institute. By the same year, September Environmental protection Bureau of Shaan xi Province the aerosol lab was evaluated as the provincial key lab (class two)
